Overview

The Master's Program has a professional orientation, emphasizing applications and applicable theory; it is intended to provide an "operational" knowledge of the subject. The M.S. in Statistics is often completed by students entering the Ph.D. program in Applied Statistics.

Admission Requirements

Students entering the Master's program in Statistics must either have completed a Bachelor's degree in Statistics (or the equivalent), or take Stat 160A-160B-160C, Stat 161, Stat 170A-170B and Stat 171, covering basic areas of probability and statistics. These courses would not be counted as credit towards the Master's Degree. Students must also meet the general requirements for admission as specified by the Graduate Division:

Coursework

The program is described by the Graduate Division as Plan II; that is, it is taken by comprehensive examination and not by thesis. It is expected that graduate students in Statistics take (or have already taken) appropriate courses in Mathematics to give them the proper background for graduate work in Statistics. Early in the program the student submits a program proposal, which requires the approval of the M.S. advisor. The advisor also supervises the student's progress and course of study.

Basic Requirements
  • Calculus (at least Math 9A-9B-9C and 10A)
  • Linear Algebra (at least Math 131)
  • The following courses are strongly encouraged:
    • At least one of Math 120, Math 126, Math 135A-135B, Math 151A-151B-151C, Math 165A-165B, and Math 209A-209B-209C.
    • The specific courses selected naturally depend on the research area selected by the student.
  • No foreign language is required
Specific Courses (a minimum of 36 units):

Qualifying Examinations

The M.S. degree is awarded on the basis of completion of all courses and successfully passing a written comprehensive examination. This will generally be offered twice annually, in the fall and spring quarters. Some students proceed from the M.S. degree to the Ph.D. in Applied Statistics.

Financial Aid

The Statistics Department has a number of teaching and research assistantships available for qualified students. The number of positions varies from year to year. Currently, more than 20 students are receiving support from these sources. More information is available through the Graduate Division and the Graduate Secretary in the Department of Statistics.

Additional Information

The Graduate Division or the faculty and staff of the Department of Statistics can provide additional information for students interested in the M.S. in Statistics.
